ABOUT THIS TRIP

On this week-long, point-to-point odyssey, we’ll explore Portugal, from its northern coastal cities to the sun-drenched beaches near Lisbon, all from the vantage point of your saddle — and the dinner table, of course, because this is inGamba. Starting just south of Porto in Vila Nova de Gaia, you’ll head south along the stunning Atlantic edge, turning towards historic towns like Aveiro and Figueira da Foz, with your first nights spent at the Montebelo Vista Alegre Ílhavo Hotel and the Universal Boutique Hotel.

The real riding begins as you pedal over rolling coastal roads and past serene lagoons, before a classic inland leg takes you to the breathtaking Montebelo Mosteiro de Alcobaça Historic Hotel. Then, you’ll find your way back to the coast for two nights at the Well Hotel & Spa, where you’ll enjoy a shorter, leisurely coffee ride before the final push. The trip culminates with a spectacular finish in Cascais, staying at the beautiful Onyria Marinha Cascais, Vignette Collection by IHG before transfers to Lisbon.

This trip will reveal Portugal’s unique coastal landscape and culture, staying in a hand-picked selection of unique and charming properties along the way, taking you right to the heart of what we think is European cycling’s best-kept secret. Expect quiet roads and hours of fun on rolling terrain through beautiful seaside countryside.

MEET THE GUIDES

Sérgio Paulinho

The World Tour veteran

After an impressive pro career that started back in 2003, Sérgio Paulinho joined the inGamba team at the start of 2022 after his retirement. But we’ve known him for a long time, as not only did he race against our founder João Correia, but he was also a teammate of our star guide Manuel Cardoso back in the day. A two-time national champion in Portugal, Sérgio has also won stages at the Tour de France and Vuelta a España, and in 2004, he won a silver medal in the road race at the Athens Olympics. So it’s fair to say the man has pedigree! It isn’t the racing victories that impress us most about Sérgio though, it’s his personality, his friendly nature on and off the bike, and the fact that he’s always ready with a smile. That said, if you find yourself running out of gas on a big climb, it certainly helps to have someone like him beside you!

DAY BY DAY BREAKDOWN

1

Porto-Aveiro

Sunday | 75km & 367m

Your adventure begins in Vila Nova de Gaia, Porto’s southern twin across the Douro — a fitting start, with the smell of the Atlantic already in the air. Today is a day to find your legs and your rhythm, easing south through the coastal pine forests and quiet backroads that make this stretch of Portugal feel like a well-kept secret. The terrain is gentle and the pace unhurried, with the ocean appearing in glimpses through the trees before you roll into Aveiro — a city of canals, colourful moliceiro boats, and the kind of seafood that will make you very glad you didn’t skip lunch. After the first ride, the first massage, the first pastel de nata — you’ll already know this was a good idea.

2

Aveiro - Figueira D. Foz

Monday | 66km & 466m

Shorter in distance but with a little more character in the road, today takes you south through the vast coastal lagoon of the Ria de Aveiro. The landscape is unlike anywhere else in Europe — a shimmering patchwork of saltpans, wetlands, and dune-backed beaches stretching as far as you can see. The riding is quiet and contemplative, the kind of day where conversation comes easily and kilometres disappear without you noticing. Figueira da Foz awaits at the finish — a proper Portuguese beach town with a lively esplanade and the Atlantic crashing in broad, dramatic waves. Dinner tonight will be worth lingering over.

3

Figueira - Alcobaça

Tuesday | 88km & 841m

The ride changes tone today. Leaving the coast behind, you head inland through rolling vineyards and silver-green olive groves, the road rising and falling as Portugal’s countryside asserts itself. This is the day you’ll really start to feel the riding — 841 metres of climbing that reward you at every crest with views that no guidebook quite captures. The destination, however, is worth every pedal stroke. The Montebelo Mosteiro de Alcobaça Historic Hotel sits in the shadow of one of the most extraordinary Gothic monasteries in the world, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that has stood for over 800 years. Tonight, history and hospitality share the same table.

4

Alcobaça - Torres

Wednesday | 102km & 1291m

The longest day, and the most rewarding. This is the ride you’ll be talking about long after you’ve gone home — 102 kilometres through the heart of Portugal’s Silver Coast, with over 1,200 metres of climbing woven through cork oak forests, hidden valleys, and windswept headlands. The roads are quiet, the views are sweeping, and Sérgio will be exactly the kind of company you want on a day like this. Pace yourself through the morning and the afternoon will look after itself. Torres Vedras — a town steeped in Napoleonic history and surrounded by vineyards — is a fine place to celebrate the biggest day in the saddle.

5

Santa Cruz Coffee ride

Thursday | 53km & 700m

After yesterday’s efforts, the legs get a gentler ask today — but don’t let the word coffee ride mislead you. This is still 700 metres of climbing through some of the most dramatic Atlantic coastline you’ll find anywhere in Europe, with the surf crashing below and the sea air doing what only sea air can. Santa Cruz is a surfer’s town with a relaxed, unhurried energy that suits the day perfectly. This is the morning for a long espresso on a terrace, for taking in the view, for remembering why you came. Two nights at the remarkable Areias do Seixo Hotel — one of Portugal’s most celebrated boutique properties, set among windswept dunes — means there’s no rush to go anywhere at all.

6

Porto Novo -Cascais

Friday | 84km & 1,302m

The final ride, and inGamba has saved the best for last. This is the day that earns its elevation the honest way — 1,302 metres of climbing on roads that feel almost cinematic, hugging the coast as you work your way south towards Cascais. The Atlantic is never far, the light in the afternoon is golden, and by the time you sweep into one of the most elegant seaside towns on the Iberian Peninsula, you’ll feel every bit the returning hero. The Farol Hotel — a converted 19th-century mansion with a clifftop pool and views that stretch to the horizon — is the perfect place to raise a glass, look back at the week, and wonder how you’re going to top it.

7

DEPARTURE

This is our final morning together and after a leisurely breakfast, it will be time to say goodbye, or at least arrivederci, until we meet again. Transfers to the airport will be arranged by our hard-working crew but if you’re planning on staying a few extra days, let us know if we can help with reservations or a few recommendations.
