MEET THE GUIDES

EROS POLI

THE CHAMPION

The night before Eros Poli took victory atop Mont Ventoux he couldn’t sleep. It was not like he was dreaming of victory or even had the slightest idea the next day’s stage would change his life forever. It was just that it was hot. Unbearably, unsleepably hot in his less-than stellar French hotel. His roommate had taken his mattress off the bed and was sleeping on the small balcony outside their room. And the man who would shortly become known as Monsieur Ventoux was watching football, Italy vs. Brazil in the World Cup final, to be exact. Italy lost. The following morning as Eros dragged his weary, tired legs out of bed and down the stairs, as there was no lift, James Brown came into his head. “I feel good, I knew that I would now,” started to repeat over and over in his head. As it would the rest of the day. He felt good and the rest, as they say, is history.

This renowned route stretches between Meiringen and Grindelwald, providing breathtaking views of glaciers and the iconic north face of the Eiger as it winds its way beneath 1700m-high slopes. With a challenging ascent of 1300m over 16km, featuring gradients as steep as 12%, the Grosse Scheidegg promises a truly unique cycling experience that demands both effort and determination. The exhilarating descent to Grindelwald follows, allowing for a well-deserved rest in this charming village in the shadows of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau mountains.

The melodious chiming of cowbells adds to the poetic charm of this idyllic setting.

4

ANDERMATT BY GRIMSEL & FURKA PASS

Wednesday | 100km & 2,741m

On today’s journey, we will depart from Interlaken and make our way to the new hotel in Andermatt. Our route will take us through two Swiss passes, Grimsel and Furka. The ascent to the Furka Pass road begins at the rear of the Urseren Valley, near the village of Realp. During the summer, it’s possible to witness the iconic sight of the Furka Train’s steam engine chugging along. As we progress, we will pass through the hamlet of Tiefenbach, and then traverse a slope-terrace before we ride the tight curves to reach the peak at an elevation of 2431 meters above sea level. From here, you’ll be treated to a breathtaking panoramic view of the Gotthard Massif and the Urseren Valley.

5

SUSTEN PASS

Thursday | 56km & 1,921m

The Susten Pass is a renowned part of the Three-Pass-Ride, which includes the Furka and Grimsel Pass. It connects the Reuss Valley with the Hasli Valley, and the village of Wassen in Canton Uri with Innertkirchen in Canton Bern. Notably, the Susten Pass road, opened in 1945, was the first pass road specifically constructed for vehicular traffic.

6

FURKA-NUFENEN-GOTTHARD

Friday | 109km & 3,231m

We finish with a bang. The Furka-Nufenen-Gotthard loop is an iconic route for cycling enthusiasts, featuring three legendary passes that are part of the Tour de Suisse. This 109-kilometer loop is challenging, with nearly 40 kilometers of ascent. Starting in Andermatt, Canton Uri, you will pass through Zumdorf, the smallest village in Switzerland, before climbing the 13-kilometer Furka Pass, reaching a summit of 2,429 meters. The journey continues to the Nufenen Pass, a 13-kilometer ascent reaching 2,478 meters, and characterized by long straight lines followed by beautiful switchbacks. Then a long and magnificent descent leads to Airolo, where you begin the third and final ascent of the day to the Gotthard Pass, which sits at an elevation of 2,106 meters. The route offers a chance to experience the iconic Gotthard Tunnel, the fourth longest tunnel in the world, which diverts most traffic, leaving the main road over the pass available for cyclists to enjoy.

7
