ABOUT THIS TRIP

If you’re looking for a cycling trip with a strong mind/body connection, join us for a week of meditation, yoga, ice baths, and of course, cycling. Based around our ever-popular Chianti Classico trip, this week combines great riding (and our signature food and drink) with insights from sports and meditation specialist Patrick Sweeney, one of inGamba’s original partners.

Sweeney, an experienced Buddhist philosophy and meditation teacher, has been mentoring and teaching professional cyclists for the past seven years. He offers a comprehensive approach to training, racing, and living, using mindful awareness as well as other meditation techniques and contemplative practices. His goal is to help cyclists integrate all aspects of their lives towards the dual goals of mastering the discipline, art and science of cycling as well as the discipline, art and science of being human.

For those who understand that cycling is much more than riding a bike, this trip is for you. Sweeney stresses a more holistic approach, combining physical, mental and emotional training into a single, unified model. In addition to the physical aspects of racing or simply riding, Sweeney also examines how mental clarity or emotional regulation are central ingredients to better performance on a bike. We know that the way that a cyclist deals emotionally with the setbacks incurred in a crash during a race will impact their comeback. Similarly, the way a working professional deals with their own time constraints will impact the ability they have to maximize the time they have to ride and train.

On this trip, mornings begin early with a yoga session and breathing practices, immediately followed by a cold plunge on our open-air terrace at Borgolecchi. After breakfast, there will be a guided meditation at our service course before rolling out for one of our scenic rides. The week’s riding will start out in a slightly more relaxed manner as we build up both physically and mentally for our ultimate ride along the challenging roads of the Crete Senesi, home to many of the key gravel roads found in Strade Bianche. And of course, enjoy all the amenities that Borgolecchi has to offer, from perfect post-ride meals prepared by Tomi, our in-house chef, to the best local wines that the Chianti region has to offer.

MEET THE GUIDES

Sancho

Sancho da Cruz

The late bloomer

Sancho had a late start to cycling, but he has been very passionate about bikes ever since. His love for the sport even made him change career paths to race professionally — until, oh, the pandemic. Covid saw him go back to school; he became one of our guides after interviewing João for his masters final thesis on Active Tourism. Today, he is more than happy to share his passion for the sport with you, helping you on and off the bike, whether your goal is to go full gas or simply take it easy and make the most of the scenery.

OUR SERVICE COURSE

The Service Course is where our mechanics and soigneurs perform their magic.

With years of experience in the professional peloton, they are dedicated to ensuring that your Pinarello is prepared exclusively for you. If you have traveled with us before, you know first-hand how amazing their attention to detail is. At inGamba, five mechanics work meticulously and calmly to tune and adjust our fleet of Pinarello Dogma F’s. They fine-tune saddle heights, clean the bikes, and make necessary last-minute adjustments every day.

Similarly, the soigneurs are like wizards, using their experience as professional riders to attend to your needs and prepare you for each day’s challenges. From filling bottles to preparing ride food, they ensure you are well taken care of, providing massages to ease sore muscles and preparing you for the ride ahead.

DAY BY DAY BREAKDOWN

1

IL GIRO DEL BARONE

Sunday | 27km & 424m

Arriving mid-day Sunday, the Giro del Barone ride is just a short loop to stretch our legs and dial in our bikes. But already there will be plenty to see, for while this ride is only 27 kilometers in distance, it is clearly “Made in Chianti.” After all, we are in the heart of one of Italy’s most famous wine regions. Fittingly, we roll past Castello di Brolio early in the ride, just one of the many expansive domains tucked away in these rolling hills that will be on non-stop display throughout the week.

2

CASTELNUOVO BERARDENGA

Monday | 42km & 721m

Castelnuovo Beradenga is our main destination on day two, and in addition to being another one of the historic wineries in this region, it is also a great place for a coffee stop.

This loop was first designed as the coffee ride by inGamba founder João Correia when he was a professional cyclist living in Lecchi. João loved to ride down to Pianello, where he would sit down for coffee and read Gazzetta dello Sport, and as the inGamba crew unanimously agrees, it makes for an ideal relaxed ride.

3

MONTELUCO RADDA VIA VILA

Tuesday | 57km & 1,242m

The highlight of today’s ride is the spectacular climb to Monteluco. While there are numerous roads that climb to Monteluco, we start from Castagnoli, where the road climbs gently past the Cantalici Winery. The landscape and geography vary constantly over this 10-kilometer rise, while the descent offers spectacular views.

We then roll through the sumptuous village of San Gusmè before riding over to Castel di Brolio, where we have our coffee stop at Café Agribar Brolio.
Brolio may be known for its wine, this café is a cycling hotspot, as it sponsors its own Eroica team and covers its walls with its rich collection of cycling memorabilia. While we are only a few kilometers from Lecchi, instead of returning directly, we loop around via Radda in Chianti. These are the roads of the annual Eroica vintage cycling event, and Gaiole in Chianti, home to the start and finish, is just a few kilometers up the road.

4

Volpaia COFFEE RIDE

Wednesday | 40km & 932m

Introduced this year on our Chianti Classico trip, the Volpaia loop has been an instant hit. Designed by inGamba guide Sancho da Cruz, it is one of his favorite rides. “Volpaia is even smaller than Lecchi,” says da Cruz. “But the first time I rode through the town, I just fell in love with it. It sits on top of this hill. The climb to Volpaia is not easy, but the views are simply amazing.”

In addition, the village itself is simply pristine, seemingly unchanged over the centuries, offering us the perfect spot for coffee. “As soon as I discovered this village, I knew I had to share it with the people at inGamba,” da Cruz adds.

5

Castellina

Thursday | 62km & 1,102m

The Castellina loop is one of our favorite Chianti Classico rides. The distance-to-climbing ratio is ideal, and each road offers stunning views. Early in the ride, we roll through Castellina itself, a picturesque and historic fortified town that dates back to the Etruscan period.

Riding south out of Castellina, views of Siena peak in and out of view on the horizon, dotted with lush vineyards. When it comes to sheer beauty, the Castellina loop is hard to beat, and it is obvious why it has been so popular over the years.

6

CRETE SENESI

Friday | 83km & 1,257m

For our final ride, we will do a short transfer out of Chianti into the Crete Senesi region. But while the Crete Senesi area borders Chianti, the landscape is distinctly different, as the familiar forests and vineyards of Chianti give way to more open terrain. It is here where much of the legendary Strade Bianche unfolds over rugged climbs like the Mont Santa Maria or the San Martin in Grania, which are so central to this contemporary classic.

It is our longest and most challenging ride, and the perfect ride to finish out an extraordinary week.

7

DEPARTURE

This is our final morning together and after a leisurely breakfast, it will be time to say goodbye, or at least arrivederci, until we meet again. Transfers to the airport will be arranged by our hard-working crew but if you’re planning on staying a few extra days, let us know if we can help with reservations or a few recommendations.
