Some weeks in Chianti are about the riding. This one is about the riding and everything that ends up in your glass afterward.
We’re joined this April by Aldo Sohm, the Austrian sommelier who runs the wine program at Le Bernardin in New York and holds the title of Best Sommelier in the World. Aldo has ridden with inGamba before, most memorably over Zoom during a Zwift session that ended, predictably, with a glass of wine and a lesson none of us expected to need on a Tuesday night. This time he’s doing it properly: on the ground in Chianti, at the cellar door, glass in hand.
The riding is classic Borgolecchi: six days out of our fifteenth-century base in Lecchi, climbing through vineyards that supply half the bottles on Aldo’s list back home. What’s different is who’s pouring. We’ve built the week around three tastings at estates that don’t do public visits, Aldo walking the group through what’s actually in the glass and why it tastes the way it does after a five-hour ride instead of a five-minute pour. The week closes with a themed dinner where everyone brings their own favorite bottle to share and Aldo tells you, honestly, what he thinks of it.
This is Tuscany the way we know it best, with someone who knows wine better than almost anyone on earth along for the ride.
Borgolecchi is a destination in itself. Non-riding companions can enjoy a full programme of cultural experiences, relaxation, and Tuscan exploration while you’re on the bike.
Aldo Sohm is the wine director at Le Bernardin, the three-Michelin-star New York institution, and the owner of his own namesake wine bar next door. In 2008 he was named Best Sommelier in the World, becoming the first Austrian to hold the title, and he’s since written the bestselling guide Wine Simple. He’s no stranger to inGamba either: he joined us for a Zwift ride and wine tasting a few years back, and this April he’s finally trading the trainer for the real roads of Chianti. Expect three cellar-door tastings across the week, a hand in the final night’s themed dinner, and the kind of wine knowledge that turns a good glass into a great story.

We land mid-morning and go straight to Borgolecchi for lunch, then loosen the legs on the Giro del Barone, a short loop that's less about distance and more about reminding your body it's in Tuscany. It's a gentle introduction to the roads we'll spend the week on, and by the time we roll back into Lecchi around 4:30pm, most of the group has already found its rhythm. Aperitivo and dinner at Borgolecchi to close out the first night.
Our first full day out, tracing the Castellina route in reverse through the heart of Chianti Classico. We're back at Borgolecchi by noon, then it's a scenic drive to San Gimignano for lunch at Montenidoli, one of the region's most respected organic estates. Massage in the afternoon, then aperitivo and dinner back home.
The longest and hardest day of the week, and the first tasting with Aldo. Around the 21km mark we stop at MonteBernardi, arriving mid-morning, for a wine tasting that sets the tone for the rest of the trip: technical enough to teach you something, relaxed enough that nobody's rushing you through it. We finish the ride back in Lecchi by early afternoon, lunch at Paolo's, and a massage before an early-evening visit to Caparsa on the way to dinner at Le Panzanelle in the Chianti hills.
A shorter day on paper, but not a quiet one. At kilometer 22.8 we roll into Felsina for the week's second tasting with Aldo, one of Chianti Classico's benchmark producers and a house Aldo knows well from his own wine list. Back in Lecchi by midday for lunch, then a late-afternoon visit to San Giusto a Rentennano before dinner at Borgolecchi.
No tasting on the bike today, deliberately. We ride through some of the most scenic terrain of the week, past Badia a Coltibuono's ancient abbey walls, and save our energy for the evening: a vineyard walk through Castello di Ama's celebrated art collection, followed by aperitivo and dinner on the estate. It's one of the most photographed evenings on any inGamba Tuscany trip, and this year Aldo's there to talk through what's in the glass.
Our final ride day heads south into Brunello country, finishing at Stella di Campalto rather than riding all the way back to Lecchi, a shorter, sharper day that leaves plenty of afternoon for the main event. After lunch in Montalcino, we sit down at Biondi Santi, the estate that essentially invented Brunello di Montalcino, for the week's third and final tasting with Aldo. Back at Borgolecchi, it's a themed farewell dinner: everyone brings a bottle they love to share with the table, and Aldo tastes through them with you. (Fontodi, Isole e Olena, and Monsanto are always well represented.)
This is our final morning together and after a leisurely breakfast, it will be time to say goodbye, or at least arrivederci, until we meet again. Transfers to the airport will be arranged by our hard-working crew but if you’re planning on staying a few extra days, let us know if we can help with reservations or a few recommendations.
You may hear sweet clarinet notes wafting toward your window at Borgolecchi, as our resident aristocrat practises his newfound love. We’re never quite sure if all of his stories are based in reality, but they are without doubt highly entertaining.
