Secret Sardinia

$8,950
Lead Guide:

Eros Poli

Sardinia is a land of contrasts. The coastline is full of calm, cerulean-blue bays and spotless beaches, while the interior boasts a rugged, unforgiving beauty. Its historical towns and cities are steeped in history and have played a huge part in mediterranean culture, but riding in the countryside offers a rare kind of peace and seclusion. Known in Italy as a summertime playground of the rich and famous, it is also synonymous with shepherds and a bygone agrarian lifestyle.

In short, it’s the kind of place you need to experience for yourself, because everyone will take home something different. It might have the population of a medium-sized city, but when it comes to art, history, and cuisine, it packs the kind of punch that would knock out most large countries. And, of course, the landscape is stunning. This point-to-point adventure will explore the best that this incredible island has to offer, and introduce you to a completely different side to Italy. There will be beaches, mountains, delicious food, incredible hotels, quaint old villages and medieval towns – and mile after mile of unforgettable riding.

MEET THE GUIDES

EROS POLI

THE CHAMPION

The night before Eros Poli took victory atop Mont Ventoux he couldn’t sleep. It was not like he was dreaming of victory or even had the slightest idea the next day’s stage would change his life forever. It was just that it was hot. Unbearably, unsleepably hot in his less-than stellar French hotel. His roommate had taken his mattress off the bed and was sleeping on the small balcony outside their room. And the man who would shortly become known as Monsieur Ventoux was watching football, Italy vs. Brazil in the World Cup final, to be exact. Italy lost. The following morning as Eros dragged his weary, tired legs out of bed and down the stairs, as there was no lift, James Brown came into his head. “I feel good, I knew that I would now,” started to repeat over and over in his head. As it would the rest of the day. He felt good and the rest, as they say, is history.

DAY BY DAY BREAKDOWN

1

CAPO CACCIA

Sunday | 22.5km & 380m

The Capo Caccia test ride is a perfect introduction to riding in Sardinia. At just over 30 kilometers, it’s just long enough to let you limber up after traveling, without being too challenging. The route is an out-and-back that takes us around the bay from Porto Conte to a famous stalactite cave known as Neptune’s Grotto, which is only accessible by a dramatic stairway of 654 steps that were cut into the cliff in the 1950s.

2

ISOLA ROSSA

Monday | 84km & 1,490m

It’s time to explore the northern peninsula of Stintino, which is home to several famous beaches, including the beautiful La Pelosa. The first part of the ride will be inland, but once we’re on Stintino, the Mediterranean will be in full view. The terrain is undulating all day, but with just over 800m of elevation gain spread out over 111km, there are no big climbs to worry about.

3

PERFUGAS

Tuesday | 64km & 1,041m
This loop ride brings us east towards Perfugas, which dates back to the Medieval times. The highest point of the ride comes in the first few kilometers, 400 meters above sea level, and the route is anything but flat, with rolling roads until we get back to our home.
4

CASTELSARDO — GROTTE DI NETTUNO — BAIA DELLE NINFE

Wednesday | 93km & 785m

This point to point ride is all about up and down. It rolls through several quaint little towns as it explores the Sardinian interior, heading south towards the countryside and back to the sea in Fertilia. Any climbers in the group should save an effort for the sharp ramp in Grotta di Nettuno after about 79km.

5

STINTINO LA PELOSA

Thursday | 108.5km & 807m
Today we leave the Parco Natural di Porto Conte behind and head towards Stintino, one of Sardinia’s prettiest small towns with the clear blue water just in front of us. It’s going to be a day with two major climbs, one in the first quarter and the second in the third quarter.
6

VILLANOVA MONTELEONE

Friday | 85km & 1,265m
The coastal road south of Alghero is one of the most scenic route in the whole island and a perfect warm up for the “wall”, a
challenging climb leading inland towards Villanova Monteleone. After a spectacular descent over Lake Temo, it’s all the way back to our home in Maristella, passing sleepy towns on the way.
7

DEPARTURE

Saturday
This is our final morning together and after a leisurely breakfast, it will be time to say goodbye, or at least arrivederci, until we meet again. Transfers to the airport will be arranged by our hard-working crew but if you’re planning on staying a few extra days, let us know if we can help with reservations or a few recommendations.
