EAT

Culurgiones sealed by hand into their wheat-ear pleat, malloreddus alla campidanese with sausage and saffron, porceddu roasted slowly over myrtle branches, bottarga shaved over a plate of fregola, pane carasau still warm from the wood oven, seadas drizzled with bitter honey, Bosa’s own Mediterranean lobster pulled straight from the Temo estuary.

DRINK

Vermentino from the granite hills behind Castelsardo, Cannonau di Sardegna poured generously at every dinner, Malvasia di Bosa from the vineyards lining the river you’ll ride beside, mirto steeped in myrtle berries, espresso on a terrace looking out at Capo Caccia.

About This Trip

Italy, but not as you know it.

Sardinia isn’t really Italy. Not in the way you’d expect. It has its own language, its own history of Nuragic towers and Doria castles, and a coastline so varied it swings from granite cliffs to pastel fishing villages within a single day’s ride. inGamba brings you here to ride the north and west of the island: a week that trades the crowds of the Costa Smeralda for hilltop shepherd towns, prehistoric stone monuments, and roads that see more sheep than cars.

Six days of riding trace a route from the clifftop fortress town of Castelsardo inland through Anglona, a region so dense with nuraghi that Nulvi alone counts nearly eighty of them within its borders. You’ll ride past Sedini, where a domus de janas the size of a house has been carved into a single limestone boulder and inhabited, in one form or another, for five thousand years. You’ll skirt the still waters of Lake Coghinas before turning west toward the sea, arriving at Alghero’s Catalan old town for the back half of the week. From there the roads climb inland again to Monteleone Rocca Doria, one of the smallest villages in Sardinia, perched on a rock surrounded on three sides by Lake Temo, before the final push south to Bosa, where houses in every shade of pink, ochre, and blue tumble down to the river beneath the Malaspina castle.

The riding is honest and varied. Six days, 449km, and roughly 7,550m of climbing, split between punchy inland days that test the legs and one long coastal transfer day that lets them recover. Nothing here is flat, but nothing requires a climber’s physique either. It’s the kind of terrain that rewards steady effort and a good pair of eyes for the scenery.

What is predictable is the inGamba experience around it. Your Pinarello Dogma F is serviced every morning. A professional soigneur works on your legs every evening. The first three nights are spent above Castelsardo at Bajaloglia Resort, looking down over the Gulf of Asinara; the final three are at Villa Las Tronas, a nineteenth-century royal retreat built on its own promontory in Alghero.

Sardinia rewards curiosity more than almost anywhere else in Italy. This week is for cyclists who want the island underneath the postcard, and who are ready to be surprised by a version of Italy that doesn’t feel like Italy at all.

Your Week In Italy

Benebbènnida! Welcome to Sardinia, an island that has always gone its own way. Perched above Castelsardo at Bajaloglia Resort, you'll spend your first afternoon shaking out travel legs on a short loop through the hills above the Gulf of Asinara, with the medieval Doria Castle and its rooftops of Castelsardo laid out below you. It's a gentle introduction to a week that only gets more interesting from here.

Lunch Dinner

Today heads inland into Anglona, Sardinia's quietest historical region. The route climbs toward Sedini, a village built into and around La Rocca, an enormous limestone boulder hollowed out by hand five thousand years ago and inhabited, in various forms, right up until the last century. From there the road drops toward Lake Coghinas, the second-largest reservoir on the island, its still water framed by the Limbara mountains in the distance. It's a day of contrasts: prehistoric stone one moment, engineered water the next.

Breakfast Lunch Dinner

The biggest climbing day of the northern loop, and one that earns its reputation. Nulvi sits at 500 metres on the slopes of Monte San Lorenzo, the historic capital of Anglona and, remarkably, home to nearly eighty separate nuraghi within its small municipal borders. Getting there means working through rolling shepherd country, cheese and wine territory where the roads are narrow, the traffic is nonexistent, and the views stretch back toward the sea you rode away from that morning. By the time you roll back into Bajaloglia, you'll understand why Nulvi was once considered the region's most important town.

Breakfast Lunch Dinner

After three days inland, today turns toward the coast. It's the longest distance of the week but the gentlest in elevation, a transfer day that trades punchy climbs for a steady coastal rhythm as the route works its way west toward Alghero. Bags move ahead of you to Villa Las Tronas, a nineteenth-century seaside villa built on its own private promontory, once the summer retreat of the Italian royal family and, for the next three nights, yours.

Breakfast Lunch Dinner

The longest day of the week takes you inland from Alghero to Monteleone Rocca Doria, one of the smallest municipalities in all of Sardinia, with barely a hundred residents left. The village sits on a limestone plateau ringed on three sides by Lake Temo, a natural fortress that the Doria family fortified in the thirteenth century, only for it to fall after a two-year siege in 1436. What remains is a near-silent cluster of stone streets, the ruins of a castle, and one of the best panoramas on the west coast. The climbing is real, but the reward at the top is one of the quietest, strangest places you'll ride to all week.

Breakfast Lunch Dinner

The biggest climbing total of the trip, saved for the final full day of riding. The route heads south along the coast before turning inland toward Bosa, where houses in pink, yellow, and blue climb the hillside above the Temo, Sardinia's only navigable river, watched over by the Malaspina castle since 1112. It's one of the most photographed towns on the island, and for good reason. Legs will be tired by the time you reach it, but a glass of Malvasia di Bosa, made from grapes grown along the same river you just rode beside, has a way of putting that in perspective.

Breakfast Lunch Dinner

This is our final morning together and after a leisurely breakfast, it will be time to say goodbye, or at least arrivederci, until we meet again. Transfers to the airport will be arranged by our hard-working crew but if you’re planning on staying a few extra days, let us know if we can help with reservations or a few recommendations.

The Storyteller

You may hear sweet clarinet notes wafting toward your window at Borgolecchi, as our resident aristocrat practises his newfound love. We’re never quite sure if all of his stories are based in reality, but they are without doubt highly entertaining.

Giorgio is a supportive presence, encouraging you during challenging climbs and joining you in races if you’re up for it. His philosophy revolves around embracing life to the fullest and seizing every moment.

@giorgiovalvassori

"We're specifically trying to give our guests the closest experience of what it means to be in a pro team, at any speed."

The Pro Experience

A literal WorldTour service.

With years of experience in the professional peloton, our mechanics and soigneurs bring WorldTour-level care to every detail of your ride. Up to five mechanics work meticulously each day to ensure your Pinarello is perfectly tuned and adjusted for you alone—not just race-ready, but dialed to your precise preferences. Meanwhile, our soigneurs draw on their own experience as professional riders to anticipate your needs before you voice them: bottles filled and positioned exactly right, ride food prepared and timed to fuel you through the hardest climbs, post-ride massages that ease tired muscles, and the kind of quiet, confident support that prepares you mentally and physically for whatever the road brings next. This is the care that once belonged only to the pros. With inGamba, it’s yours.
