ABOUT THIS TRIP

This trip takes you into the beating heart of the Dolomites, where we’ll take on some of the most revered climbs in the world, surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of a mountain range that has forged legends and shaped our sport.

And because you’re with inGamba, you’ll experience all of this with the kind of equipment and support that normally only professionals can enjoy, while enjoying some luxurious lodgings at two unique hotels: The Hotel Santer in Bressanone, and Hotel La Perla in Corvara. Both of these destinations epitomize the comfort, warmth, and style that has made this part of Italy so famous, while also offering unrivaled access to Italy’s great mountains.

You can look forward to roads steeped in history and some of the sport’s most legendary climbs, from the Passo Pordoi, where Fausto Coppi and Gino Bartali fought one of their most famous battles, to the Passo delle Erbe, where a young Marco Pantani first grabbed global attention with a stunning solo victory during the 1994 Giro d’Italia.

What's Included?

MEET THE GUIDES

EROS POLI

THE CHAMPION

The night before Eros Poli took victory atop Mont Ventoux he couldn’t sleep. It was not like he was dreaming of victory or even had the slightest idea the next day’s stage would change his life forever. It was just that it was hot. Unbearably, unsleepably hot in his less-than stellar French hotel. His roommate had taken his mattress off the bed and was sleeping on the small balcony outside their room. And the man who would shortly become known as Monsieur Ventoux was watching football, Italy vs. Brazil in the World Cup final, to be exact. Italy lost. The following morning as Eros dragged his weary, tired legs out of bed and down the stairs, as there was no lift, James Brown came into his head. “I feel good, I knew that I would now,” started to repeat over and over in his head. As it would the rest of the day. He felt good and the rest, as they say, is history.

MANUEL CARDOSO

The Quiet Crusher

Manuel Cardoso is no longer sitting on the front of the pack, pulling everyone along at what some would describe as a “brisk” pace and what others are unable to describe at all, because they’re too busy gasping for breath and holding onto the wheel in front of them for dear life. Manuel is now sitting just slightly off the back of the pack. As I look back, I realize he has that look on his face. The look which struck fear in the hearts of the Pro Peleton for many years. The look which is part grin, part mischievous child and all business. He is about to start some shenanigans. Sure enough, just a few kilometers later and Manuel has picked one lucky contestant out of the pack and they are sitting-in, waiting, like predators, for the perfect moment. For Manuel, just like when he raced pro, this is when the road turns slightly up, a spot in the road where it gets tough for everyone. And he accelerates with his breakaway “partner” in tow. It is something to see. He ramps it up to a speed with which no one can latch onto the back and with such precision you have to question whether or not you actually want to try and close the gap he has created. And you can’t see it, but you just know, he is grinning from ear-to-ear.

DAY BY DAY BREAKDOWN

1

Day 1: Sillian Austria

Upon arriving, our first ride is our customary shorter opening stretch, giving riders a chance to test their legs after a travel day while making any final adjustments that may be needed on your inGamba Pinarello Dogma F. But unlike many opening rides, this one is not a loop, but instead 39-kilometer out-and-back ride that ventures into Austria.

Leaving Bagni di San Giuseppe, we roll down the valley road along the edges of the iconic Tre Cime Natural Park, before turning and crossing the Austrian border to the rustic market town Sillian, which sits in the southwest corner of the country. And while much of the ride to Sillian is gently descending, what goes down must also go up, and the return is along a steady, gentle climb. What better way to stretch your legs at the beginning of the week?

2

Day 2: Passo di Croce Comelico / Auronzo di Cadore

Monday | 89km & 1,839m

Day two promises to be one of our most challenging days, as it is our longest. On tap is a large loop that dances around the Tre Cime Natural Park and Monte Cristallo. But while we tackle two significant climbs during the day, the total altitude gain remains just under 2,000 meters.

The ride starts with the Croce Comelico climb. Also known as the Kreuzberg Pass, this pass sits on the edge of the Italian Dolomites before dropping into the Venuto region. Reaching its peak at just over 1,750 meters, it comes early in the ride and will prove plenty of challenge. But the effort will be well worth it, as the descent boasts sinuous turns and cascading mountain rivers.

And when it comes to sheer beauty, it will be hard to surpass the day’s second climb up to the Lago de Misurina, a picture-perfect mountain lake that will simply take your breath away… if you didn’t already lose it on the climb.

3

Day 3: Tre Cime di Lavaredo

Tuesday | 48km & 1,328m

Day three offers one of the week’s most anticipated rides as we tackle the iconic Tre Cime di Lavaredo. Known for its three dramatic rock face formations at the summit, the Tre Cime is one of the jewels of the Dolomites.

With the summit of the road cresting 2,300 meters, the Tre Cime has been the stage for countless battles in the Giro d’Italia since the race first came here in 1967. Just ask Eddy Merckx, Vincenzo Nibali or Primoz Roglic, who all used the Tre Cime to construct their victories in the Giro. But for any rider, really, you only have to climb the Tre Cime di Lavaredo once to remember it forever.

4

Day 4: Falzarego to Valparola

Wednesday | 82km & 1,678m

The 82-kilometer ride will allow guests to stretch out their legs throughout much of the first half with mostly gentle descending, but the nearly 20-kilometer climb up the Valparola Pass will suffice to maintain our climbing quota for the day.

The Valparola Pass finds traces of civilization dating back to the Stone Age, and more recently in cycling, it has been a frequent climb in the Giro d’Italia, as well as the world-renowned Maratona dles Dolomites fondo event. And after three memorable days at our mountain hideaway in Bagni di San Giuseppe, today’s ride will finish at La Perla, one of inGamba’s favorite hotels.

5

Day 5: Passo di Giau

Thursday | 83km & 2,492m

Today’s ride is undoubtedly the Queen Stage of our Dolomites trip, highlighted by the iconic Passo di Giau climb, which peaks out at just over 2,200 meters in altitude. Like the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, the Passo di Giau is one of the most spectacular mountain passes in the Dolomites, where its high-altitude fields meet the muscular rock-face towers. Ever since it was first introduced in 1973, it has played a central role in the Giro d’Italia, perhaps never more than when Egan Bernal soloed to victory here amidst a snowstorm during the 2021 edition.

But while the Passo di Giau may be the day’s centerpiece, it is far from the only climb we will tackle, and after descending the Giau, we will make our way towards the Passo Falzarego. Cresting at just over 2,100 meters, the Passo Falzarego is yet another mountain pass that embodies the beauty of the Dolomites with its distinctive rock formations, and like the Valparola Pass, its stature in cycling has only increased as it too is central to the Maratona dles Dolomites.

Together, these two iconic climbs will challenge us with nearly 2,500 meters of altitude gain throughout the day, our biggest day of climbing in the week. But we don’t sign up for the Dolomites trip to bathe on the beaches.

6

Day 6: Sella Ronda

Friday | 52km & 1,684m

Our Sella Ronda loop closes out our week in the Dolomites with no less than three 2,000-meter passes. It may not be our biggest day when it comes to overall altitude gain, but there is quite literally not one stretch of flat road throughout this short, punchy 51.6-kilometer loop.

All told, we tackle no less than four Italian passes on Day Six – the Passo Campolongo, Passo Pordoi, Passo Sella, and finally the Passo Gardena. But despite the non-stop climbing, the Sella Ronda loop is one of the most popular rides in the Dolomites because it manages to cover four well-known climbs without being too difficult. And needless to say, it is a great way to close out a week in the Dolomites, which promises to be one week you will never forget.
