ABOUT THIS TRIP

Dominated by the Alps and riven by deep valleys, Piedmont — meaning ‘at the foot of the mountains’— is renowned for its fine wines and as a champion of the Slow Food movement. Our team has explored this corner of northwest Italy, fanning out from Turin to visit its wine villages and seek out the best places to stay.

Piedmont stretches northeast to the shores of Lake Maggiore and southwest to Provence in France, its hills dotted with medieval villages and family-run vineyards. Although Piedmont isn’t as well known a wine region as Tuscany, it produces some of Italy’s finest labels, such as Barolo and Barbaresco. Regional cuisine is also a highlight. Raw meats, cheese fondues and rabbit feature on local menus, while the smell of hazelnuts and chocolate wafts through the chocolate-producing town of Alba. Piedmont isn’t all rustic allure, though. At its heart is the city of Turin, the first capital of the unified Italy. Renaissance and Baroque architecture, museums and galleries, and gourmet restaurants grace its boulevards and piazzas, while giants of industry ensure that Piedmont remains one of Italy’s most affluent regions.

MEET THE GUIDES

Sancho

Sancho da Cruz

The late bloomer

Sancho had a late start to cycling, but he has been very passionate about bikes ever since. His love for the sport even made him change career paths to race professionally — until, oh, the pandemic. Covid saw him go back to school; he became one of our guides after interviewing João for his masters final thesis on Active Tourism. Today, he is more than happy to share his passion for the sport with you, helping you on and off the bike, whether your goal is to go full gas or simply take it easy and make the most of the scenery.

Giorgio Valvassori

The Storyteller

You may hear the sweet, sweet notes wafting towards your window at Borgolecchi, as our resident aristocrat practices his new found love of the clarinet. We’re never quite sure if all of his stories are based on reality, but they are without a doubt highly entertaining. Probably the greatest tale Giorgio is prone to tell you is that he’s not really a cyclist. This yarn is not to be believed.

Giorgio is a supportive presence, encouraging you during challenging climbs and even joining you in races if you’re up for it. His philosophy revolves around embracing life to the fullest and seizing every moment. In Giorgio’s words, “I’m sure other good companies around offer great trips. But we’re specifically trying to give our guests the closest experience of what it means to be in a pro team, at any speed.”

DAY BY DAY BREAKDOWN

1

Monforte Test Ride

Our first ride is a scenic route through the Piedmont countryside, starting with an easy spin to Pedaggera before returning to the hotel.

2

LE LANGHE

Monday | 66km & 1,519m
Today’s ride will take you north toward the area of Le Langhe where the rolling Piedmontese clay-colored views of postcards will be in full effect. This is the neighbouring wine zone of Barolo and Barbaresco, which make up the Langhe wine area famous not only for its wine, but also cheeses and white truffles. The Langhe was inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage list in 2014.
3

BAROLO AND BARBARESCO

Tuesday | 90km & 1,673m
Today we ride along the vineyards of Barolo and Barbaresco. The Barbaresco wine region is ranked as one of the greatest in Italy. Along with Barolo, Barbaresco produces world class wines from the Nebbiolo grape in the Piedmont region. But don’t expect this to be an easy ride: today the ride will be up and down until we come back to our home in Monforte D’Alba.
4

Vicoforte — Limone

Wednesday | 60km & 1,151m

This route takes us southwest towards Limone, our major climb of the day. You can expect plenty of picturesque medieval towns and some stunning panoramic views along the way, but there’ll be some testing terrain too so this is much more than just a sightseeing loop.

5

Palanfré e Fortini Tenda

Thursday | 55km & 1702m

Today’s ride is a challenging U-shaped route that demands careful effort management. Our journey begins in Limone and takes us up the beautiful Val Grande to Palanfrè, a charming hamlet located on the edge of the Alpi Marittime Natural Park. But that’s just the beginning. We’ll then tackle Col di Tenda, a thrilling climb that features a long series of tight hairpin turns (which, thankfully, get less tight as we climb higher).

6

Fauniera Cima Pantani

Friday | 64km & 2,044m
On our last ride, we are going to experience an epic journey up the Colle Fauniera, also known as Colle Pantani. This high mountain pass stands tall at an elevation of 2,485 meters. It is believed to be one of the most captivating and unspoiled passes in the Alps. At the peak of the pass, there is a magnificent statue commemorating the legendary cyclist Marco Pantani, in honor of his remarkable climb during the Giro d’Italia ’99 through the steep climbs of the pass.
7

DEPARTURE

Saturday
This is our final morning together and after a leisurely breakfast, it will be time to say goodbye, or at least arrivederci, until we meet again. Transfers to the airport will be arranged by our hard-working crew but if you’re planning on staying a few extra days, let us know if we can help with reservations or a few recommendations.

The latest version of the DOGMA features an advanced fiber with remarkable tensile strength, which enables Pinarello to improve the bike’s lateral stiffness performance. With this enhancement, the New DOGMA F is engineered to tackle any road challenges, establishing itself as a reliable option for all kinds of rides.

In addition, it comes equipped with the new SRAM RED AXS, the lightest electronic groupset to date. The controls have been redesigned to offer smooth, comfortable ergonomics for a wide range of hand sizes. What makes this groupset stand out is the effortless braking, allowing for one-finger braking with minimal effort. The RED brakes now require 80% less effort when braking from the hoods and 33% less effort from the drops, delivering more power and reducing hand fatigue.
