EXPERIENCE: Milan – San Remo
Conquer the "Primavera" with Adrie van der Poel
ABOUT THIS TRIP
Milan-San Remo may not be the hardest of cycling’s five Monuments, but it is by far the most beautiful. For those “in the know,” MSR holds a special place in the heart of cycling. Nicknamed after Stravinsky’s masterpiece La Primavera, for its symphonic beauty, it is not only the first of the season’s Monuments, but at nearly 300 kilometers, it is the longest.
In has been said that the race to San Remo is like a Haiku painting which, after hours of meditation, is conceived with a sudden flurry of activity. For the cyclists, that meditation comes in the hundreds of kilometers ridden along the flatlands south of Milan as well as the sinuous coastline of the Italian Riviera, before a flurry of attacks over the Cipressa and Poggio climbs finally produces its winner.
In 2026 inGamba will host its own San Remo week, and it promises to be memorable. Unlike the race itself, we will avoid the urban sprawl of Milan. Instead we will set up our own base camp just an hour south of this northern industrial city, in the lower reaches of Piedmont. It is here where a certain Fausto Coppi was born, and from our historic boutique hotel, we will not only visit his birthplace, but will spend the first days riding over many of the same roads that he trained on.
Midway through our San Remo week, we with then ride up the historic Turchino Pass and down along the coast of the Mediterranean, with another day devoted to the Berta, Cipressa and Poggio climbs, before watching the actual race from our VIP seating.
The trip will be led by our ever-colorful guide Eros Poli, himself a veteran of the great Italian classic, and Adrie van der Poel, father to a certain Mathieu, and a great classics rider in his own right. Stories will be told and many hidden jewels from this region will unfold, as we discover this corner of Italy and take in all of the riches of La Primavera.

MEET THE GUIDES
EROS POLI
THE CHAMPION
The night before Eros Poli took victory atop Mont Ventoux he couldn’t sleep. It was not like he was dreaming of victory or even had the slightest idea the next day’s stage would change his life forever. It was just that it was hot. Unbearably, unsleepably hot in his less-than stellar French hotel. His roommate had taken his mattress off the bed and was sleeping on the small balcony outside their room. And the man who would shortly become known as Monsieur Ventoux was watching football, Italy vs. Brazil in the World Cup final, to be exact. Italy lost. The following morning as Eros dragged his weary, tired legs out of bed and down the stairs, as there was no lift, James Brown came into his head. “I feel good, I knew that I would now,” started to repeat over and over in his head. As it would the rest of the day. He felt good and the rest, as they say, is history.
