Caldo verde ladled from a wood-fired kitchen, rojões (crisp pork shoulder marinated in wine and garlic) from the Minho hills, bacalhau à Gomes de Sá pulled apart at the table, Barrosã beef raised on Gerês mountain pasture, river trout from the Lima, warm broa de milho cornbread, and a slice of tarte de Ponte de Lima to finish.
Vinho Verde, the young, spritzy green wine that gives this region its name, poured chilled at every meal, aguardente de Ponte de Lima to close out a long day, mountain spring water straight from the Gerês massif, espresso before every ride out, and a cold Super Bock on the terrace once the bikes are washed.
Most visitors to Portugal never make it this far north, and that’s exactly the point. Returning for 2027, this new week-long loop takes inGamba into the Minho, the country’s greenest and least-discovered region, where the Atlantic coast, the Spanish border, and Portugal’s only national park all sit within a few days’ riding of one another.
We start on the wild, wind-scoured beaches around Vila Praia de Âncora before climbing into the Serra d’Arga, a range still roamed by wild horses and dotted with granite villages that see more shepherds than cyclists. From there the route follows the Lima River inland to Ponte de Lima, Portugal’s oldest town and the unofficial capital of Vinho Verde country, before finishing in the Peneda-Gerês National Park, a landscape of granite peaks, waterfalls, and reservoirs that feels closer to the Scottish Highlands than the Portugal of postcards.
Expect quiet, well-surfaced roads, warm hospitality in three hand-picked properties, and a week that proves the best of Portugal isn’t always the part everyone talks about.

Bem-vindo a Portugal. Our first ride is a short, flat spin along the Atlantic, tracing the string of beaches and cycle paths that link Caminha to Vila Praia de Âncora. It's an easy leg-loosener after travel day, and a mechanic is on hand to sort out any last adjustments before the real climbing begins.
The road turns inland and upward into the Serra d'Arga, a range of granite peaks still roamed by herds of wild horses. Stone-walled villages and quiet switchbacks make for a proper first test of the legs, with sweeping views back to the Atlantic and across the Minho River into Spain from the top.
The longest day of the week follows the Lima River inland, leaving the coast behind for the rolling farmland and vineyards of the Minho interior. The route finishes in Ponte de Lima, Portugal's oldest town, where a Roman-medieval bridge still carries traffic across the river it's named for.
A lighter day threading through the vineyards and quintas that make Ponte de Lima the unofficial capital of Vinho Verde. Expect rolling farm roads, riverside stretches along the Lima, and plenty of reasons to slow down for a tasting.
The biggest climbing day of the week, and the most dramatic. The route leaves the wine country behind and climbs steadily into the Peneda-Gerês National Park, Portugal's only national park, finishing on the shores of the Caniçada reservoir surrounded by granite peaks.
A final loop through the heart of the national park, past waterfalls, granite outcrops, and mountain hamlets that have changed little in generations. It's a fitting finale: hard-earned climbing, wide-open descents, and some of the wildest scenery in Portugal.
This is our final morning together and after a leisurely breakfast, it will be time to say goodbye, or at least arrivederci, until we meet again. Transfers to the airport will be arranged by our hard-working crew but if you’re planning on staying a few extra days, let us know if we can help with reservations or a few recommendations.
Manuel Cardoso is no longer sitting on the front of the pack, pulling everyone along at what some would describe as a “brisk” pace and what others are unable to describe at all, because they’re too busy gasping for breath and holding onto the wheel in front of them for dear life. Manuel is now sitting just slightly off the back of the pack. As I look back, I realize he has that look on his face. The look that struck fear in the hearts of the Pro Peloton for many years. Part grin, part mischievous child, and all business. He is about to start some shenanigans.
Sure enough, just a few kilometers later, Manuel has picked one lucky contestant out of the pack and they are sitting in, waiting like predators for the perfect moment. For Manuel, just like when he raced pro, this is when the road turns slightly up. A spot where it gets tough for everyone. And he accelerates with his breakaway “partner” in tow. He ramps it up to a speed with which no one can latch on, and with such precision you have to question whether you actually want to try and close the gap he has created. And you can’t see it, but you just know he is grinning from ear to ear.

Rinoterra Minho, Paço de Vitorino, Quinta do Agrinho
Your week moves from the wild Atlantic coast to the wine country of the Lima Valley to the granite peaks of Portugal’s only national park. It opens at Rinoterra Minho, a boutique country house tucked into the parish of Seixas outside Caminha, where river and mountain views meet a spa built around an indoor pool, sauna, and Turkish bath, all wrapped in gardens of orange and lemon trees.
Three nights follow at Paço de Vitorino, a 16th-century manor house outside Ponte de Lima set among Baroque gardens, with rooms finished in Estremoz marble and a former winery reborn as a small library, before the route climbs into the mountains to Quinta do Agrinho, perched on the shore of the Caniçada reservoir inside the Peneda-Gerês National Park, with indoor and outdoor pools, a spa, and a private river beach.
The trip closes in the heart of Portugal’s wildest national park, granite peaks and still water in every direction.
