Arizona: inGamba at Canyon Ranch

When it comes to healthy living and holistic wellness retreats, Canyon Ranch is the gold standard. Since 1979 they’ve been at the forefront of health and fitness vacations, redefining what it means to be a spa destination. As the world’s best bike touring company, we know a thing or two about setting high standards too, so when it came to finding the ultimate wellness resort in the US for a new kind of inGamba experience, Canyon Ranch was the obvious choice.

This retreat is a unique chance to ride plenty of early season miles surrounded by the beautiful, untouched landscape of rural Arizona, while also taking full advantage of the expertise and hospitality that has made Canyon Ranch famous the world over. Their integrative approach to wellness – including mind, body and spirit – will leave you refreshed and reinvigorated, with a better understanding of how your body functions and the role your mind plays in your fitness. There’s no better way to start the riding season.

Day by Day Breakdown

Rillito River Park

We’ll ease into the week in Tucson with a relaxed opening ride that has just enough climbing to make you feel like you’ve earned the pampering that awaits back at Canyon Ranch. The main climb comes around 5km into the loop, lasting 3.6km and averaging around 4%, with views of Mount Kimball in the distance and plenty of quiet roads for us to enjoy. After a fun descent, we’ll head south and back toward home on the Rillito River bike path.

Gates Pass

Originally a shortcut through the Tucson Mountains for pioneers, Gates Pass is a legendary ride in the part of the world, and for good reason. With boundless views over the Arizonan landscape and no shortage of the region’s iconic Saguaro cactus to help set the scene, this is a ride that really gives you a sense of place.

Saguaro National Park

It’s time to explore the Saguaro National Park and take in all of the famous panoramic views. We only have a couple of sustained climbs on the cards but the terrain is undulating all day as we roll through the quintessentially wild west landscape, so you’ll feel it in the legs by the time we get back home. Luckily for us, there are some world-class masseuses on hand to fix us up!

Pistol hill and Colossal Cave

When you see a road called Pistol Hill, you have to ride it. Especially when it ends at a place called Colossal Cave. And then we’ll take the Old Spanish Trail home, just to make sure we all get a good dose of old school western charm. This out-and-back skirts the edge of the Saguaro National Park and is the longest ride of the week, but there’s no nasty climbs involved so it should be an enjoyable spin for everyone.

Lizard Rock

With nearly 1,500m of climbing on the cards, this is definitely the toughest ride of the week. But it might also be the most enjoyable. Mount Lemmon is the “must-do” ride around Tucson, and what better way to tackle it than with some unrivaled support from the inGamba crew? At the top, we’ll be more than 2,130m above sea level and the views will be spectacular. The descent back home promises to be pretty great, too!

Off-the-bike activities

Non-riding partners will have plenty of great activities every day, from group hikes to yoga and aquatics, creative arts, wellness presentations and fitness classes.

Explore the lush desert grounds, expansive spa and fitness facilities, tennis and pickleball courts, indoor and outdoor pools, meditation garden and more.

In addition to inGamba's staff of world-class guides and mechanics, you'll have full access to fitness trainers, nutritionists, spiritual wellness guides, physicians and certified de-burdeners to help you on your wellness journey.

Daily inspired meals and snacks created with regional, seasonal ingredients.

YOUR Guide

Eros Poli

The Champion

The night before Eros Poli took victory atop Mont Ventoux he couldn’t sleep. It was not like he was dreaming of victory or even had the slightest idea the next day's stage would change his life forever. It was just that it was hot. Unbearably, unsleepably hot in his less-than stellar French hotel. His roommate had taken his mattress off the bed and was sleeping on the small balcony outside their room. And the man who would shortly become known as Monsieur Ventoux was watching football, Italy vs. Brazil in the World Cup final, to be exact. Italy lost. The following morning as Eros dragged his weary, tired legs out of bed and down the stairs, as there was no lift, James Brown came into his head. “I feel good, I knew that I would now,” started to repeat over and over in his head. As it would the rest of the day. He felt good and the rest, as they say, is history.
