Sicily

$7,950

Sicily is a country within a country. The island is both a part of and apart from Italy, with a history and culture of all its own. The cuisine is unique, taking influences from the mainland and from the wider Mediterranean, thanks to ancient ties to north Africa and to France and Spain. And thanks to the rich, volcanic soil left over from Mount Etna’s many eruptions, Sicilian wines are just as distinctive as the dishes they accompany.

This trip will explore the eastern part of the island, from Syracuse to Catania, where the imposing silhouette of Etna is never out of view and where towns and cities are teeming with art, music and literature, with beautiful Baroque and Rococo architecture to be found at every turn.

The countryside, by contrast, is rugged and untamed, full of winding roads and undulating terrain, Greek temples and ancient Roman ruins, little villages and seemingly endless views. In other words, it’s perfect for bike riding, and we are very excited to share it with you.

Eros Poli

The Champion

The night before Eros Poli took victory atop Mont Ventoux he couldn’t sleep. It was not like he was dreaming of victory or even had the slightest idea the next day's stage would change his life forever. It was just that it was hot. Unbearably, unsleepably hot in his less-than stellar French hotel. His roommate had taken his mattress off the bed and was sleeping on the small balcony outside their room. And the man who would shortly become known as Monsieur Ventoux was watching football, Italy vs. Brazil in the World Cup final, to be exact. Italy lost. The following morning as Eros dragged his weary, tired legs out of bed and down the stairs, as there was no lift, James Brown came into his head. “I feel good, I knew that I would now,” started to repeat over and over in his head. As it would the rest of the day. He felt good and the rest, as they say, is history.
