ABOUT THIS TRIP

When it comes to photographing cycling, few people are more accomplished than our creative director James Startt. A two-time winner of the World Sports Photography Awards and a veteran of 36 Tours de France, James has fallen in love with Lecchi and thought it the perfect place to host a week of riding and photography.

“Even though Lecchi is where it all started for inGamba, for me it remains one of the true gems on our calendar,” James explains. “I thought it would be the perfect place to host a week of cycling and photography.”

James—who has photographed everyone from Greg LeMond to Tadej Pogacar—will recount anecdotes from his storied career throughout the week while discussing the craft of cycling photography. “If I had not become a cycling photographer, I would most definitely have pursued a career as a photography teacher. We’ve got the bikes, so bring your cameras and we will have a great week of riding and picture taking.”

Riding in Chianti is characterized by sweeping panoramas, perfect tarmac, challenging climbs and thrilling descents. Over six days, you’ll progress from an easy warm-up spin through the countryside to increasingly demanding terrain—from the rolling hills around Castellina to the week’s most challenging climbing day through Dudda. A leisurely coffee ride to historic Volpaia, a visit to the medieval castle of Monteluco, and a spectacular final ride through the clay-colored landscapes of Crete Senesi round out your journey. Each ride offers unique photographic opportunities set against some of Italy’s most beautiful countryside.

To celebrate this first edition of Photography Week, each participant will receive a full print of James’ award-winning photography.

Each limited-edition image (1-10) will be overseen by James, in collaboration with the master printers of Atelier Boba in Paris. This is where James prints all of his exhibition prints. The images are printed on the highest quality archival paper, and measure 55cm X 60cm, including the offset border that James prefers (a value of 600 Euros).

Giorgio Valvassori

The Storyteller

You may hear the sweet, sweet notes wafting towards your window at Borgolecchi, as our resident aristocrat practices his new found love of the clarinet. We’re never quite sure if all of his stories are based on reality, but they are without a doubt highly entertaining. Probably the greatest tale Giorgio is prone to tell you is that he’s not really a cyclist. This yarn is not to be believed.

Giorgio is a supportive presence, encouraging you during challenging climbs and even joining you in races if you’re up for it. His philosophy revolves around embracing life to the fullest and seizing every moment. In Giorgio’s words, “I’m sure other good companies around offer great trips. But we’re specifically trying to give our guests the closest experience of what it means to be in a pro team, at any speed.”

Sancho

Sancho da Cruz

The late bloomer

Sancho had a late start to cycling, but he has been very passionate about bikes ever since. His love for the sport even made him change career paths to race professionally — until, oh, the pandemic. Covid saw him go back to school; he became one of our guides after interviewing João for his masters final thesis on Active Tourism. Today, he is more than happy to share his passion for the sport with you, helping you on and off the bike, whether your goal is to go full gas or simply take it easy and make the most of the scenery.

OUR SERVICE COURSE

The Service Course is where our mechanics and soigneurs perform their magic.

With years of experience in the professional peloton, they are dedicated to ensuring that your Pinarello is prepared exclusively for you. If you have traveled with us before, you know first-hand how amazing their attention to detail is. At inGamba, five mechanics work meticulously and calmly to tune and adjust our fleet of Pinarello Dogma F’s. They fine-tune saddle heights, clean the bikes, and make necessary last-minute adjustments every day.

Similarly, the soigneurs are like wizards, using their experience as professional riders to attend to your needs and prepare you for each day’s challenges. From filling bottles to preparing ride food, they ensure you are well taken care of, providing massages to ease sore muscles and preparing you for the ride ahead.

DAY BY DAY BREAKDOWN

1

IL GIRO DEL BARONE

Benvenuti in Italia! Our first ride is an easy spin to shake off the cobwebs, but it’s also very pretty, heading south through the quiet Chianti countryside until San Giusto Alle Monache. There, we’ll loop back north, passing the stunning Castello di Brolio on the hill above San Regolo and finishing on our home climb up to Lecchi. This is the time to make sure everything with your bike is perfect – if something’s not quite right, let a mechanic or a guide know and we’ll be sure to fix it before the tough riding begins.

2

CASTELLINA

Monday | 61km & 1,102m

This morning we will climb toward the town of Radda before turning to Castellina. The earliest definition – in 1716 – of the wine area of Chianti, Lega del Chianti, is the region we explore on today’s ride. This will be a day of truly incredible views from the bike, especially after our left turn in the town of Colombaio at 35km, where the roads open up to provide plenty of quintessentially Tuscan views.

3

DUDDA

Tuesday | 78km & 1,783m
Although this region is always hilly, today’s ride includes more sustained climbing. After reaching the town of Panzano, we’ll start to really climb, rolling on some tiny roads with great views to the north towards Florence. After the summit, our Cima Coppi of the week, there’s a long, technical descent out of Albola that will test even the most-experienced riders. Don’t forget to enjoy the scenery.
4

Siena Day Trip or Coffee Ride

Wednesday

Today is usually reserved for the weekly coffee ride, but James proposes a different take and instead of riding, we will do a day trip into the heart of Siena with James and Giorgio Valvasori. Giorgio is passionate about Italian history and knows the many nuances of the history of Siena, while James has photographed this singular city on many occasions. Together they will offer a unique historical and photographic guide of the city, topped off with lunch in the magnificent Piazzo del Campo.

For those wanting to ride, however, Sancho remains available for the weekly coffee ride which he recently redesigned and is inspired by the traditional coffee shop ride taken by iGamba’s founder, João Correia, when he was a professional racer (40km). We’ll encounter gentle rolling hills and ample time for on-the-bike conversation as we ride to Volpaia, a small fortified village also known as Castello di Volpaia in Italian. Renowned for being the hometown of the della Volpaia family, clock and instrument makers, Volpaia is a place steeped in history.

5

MONTELUCO BADIACOLTIBUONO

Thursday | 65km & 1,406m

Expect gentle rolling hills and plenty of time for on-the-bike conversation as we make our way up to the castle of Monteluco di Lecchi. From this medieval fortress that dates back to 1176, you can see the whole Massellone Valley.

6

CRETE SENESI

Friday | 84km & 1,257m
Today’s ride will take you south toward the town of Montalcino where the rolling Tuscan clay-colored views of postcards will be in full effect. This is the Crete Senesi, a region known for its production of white truffles. The highlight of our ride is the ridge south of Arbia.
7

DEPARTURE

Saturday
This is our final morning together and after a leisurely breakfast, it will be time to say goodbye, or at least arrivederci, until we meet again. Transfers to the airport will be arranged by our hard-working crew but if you’re planning on staying a few extra days, let us know if we can help with reservations or a few recommendations.

STAYING LONGER?

Adventure Continues…
Do you plan to come a few days early, or stay on after your inGamba adventure has ended? Our concierge can help you plan with a carefully curated selection of hotels, restaurants, bars, and guides. All of our recommendations have been hand-picked by a team of local experts, so you can spend more time enjoying all that this destination has to offer.

In addition, it comes equipped with the new SRAM RED AXS, the lightest electronic groupset to date.
