ABOUT THIS TRIP

Puglia, the heel of Italy’s boot, is an enchanting region full of medieval hilltop villages and charming little towns, with a landscape that is dominated by picturesque vistas of vineyards and olive groves, rolling over unspoiled countryside, and of course, mile and mile of pristine coastline along the beautifully blue Adriatic Sea.

It has long been a favorite destination for Italians seeking sand and sunshine, not least because the country’s culinary cognoscenti rank it as one of the best places to eat in the Bel Paese – a statement that no one can make lightly. Local produce is the star of Puglian cuisine, and from the seasfood to the freshly picked greens, you won’t find better ingredients anywhere. And as for the wine, whether it’s Salice Salentino, Negroamaro, Primitivo, or the Bombino Nero, there’s a world of interesting flavors waiting to be discovered.

The riding will be as vibrant and as varied as the region’s terrain, and whether we’re cruising along the shore or climbing deep into the mountains of the Gargano National Park, there will not be a dull moment in this unforgettable week.

MEET THE GUIDES

Sergio

Sérgio Paulinho

The World Tour veteran

After an impressive pro career that started back in 2003, Sérgio Paulinho joined the inGamba team at the start of 2022 after his retirement. But we’ve known him for a long time, as not only did he race against our founder João Correia, but he was also a teammate of our star guide Manuel Cardoso back in the day. A two-time national champion in Portugal, Sérgio has also won stages at the Tour de France and Vuelta a España, and in 2004, he won a silver medal in the road race at the Athens Olympics. So it’s fair to say the man has pedigree! It isn’t the racing victories that impress us most about Sérgio though, it’s his personality, his friendly nature on and off the bike, and the fact that he’s always ready with a smile. That said, if you find yourself running out of gas on a big climb, it certainly helps to have someone like him beside you!

Sancho

Sancho da Cruz

The late bloomer

Sancho had a late start to cycling, but he has been very passionate about bikes ever since. His love for the sport even made him change career paths to race professionally — until, oh, the pandemic. Covid saw him go back to school; he became one of our guides after interviewing João for his masters final thesis on Active Tourism. Today, he is more than happy to share his passion for the sport with you, helping you on and off the bike, whether your goal is to go full gas or simply take it easy and make the most of the scenery.

DAY BY DAY BREAKDOWN

1

BEACH RIDE

Sunday | 27km & 123m

We’ll begin with some gentle rolling through the olive groves that characterize so much of this wonderful landscape. This is the best time to make sure everything on your bike is perfect, and if you’d like something changed, have a chat with your mechanic before the real fun begins.

2

ALBEROBELLO

Monday | 84km & 907m

This area is called the Valle d’Itria, but it’s also known widely as the Valley of the Trulli, after the iconic stone dwellings that dot the landscape. The route takes us along a plateau around 400 meters about sea level, and should offer up some stunning views before we reach Alberobello, one of the most stunning towns in Italy.

3

LA CITTA BIANCA: OSTUNI

Tuesday | 77km & 938m
More climbing to begin with today, working our way up through the vineyards and olive groves until we’re on top of the Puglian plateau, where the terrain will be undulating. The finish line is another gorgeous town, Ostuni, known as the White City. Cycling history buffs might remember it as the scene of Freddy Maertens’ first world championship victory back in 1976.
4

MATERA

Wednesday | 110km & 1,479m
We’ll be climbing right from the start today as we work our way into the Natural park Terra Delle Gravine forest and towards the town of Matera, the world’s third-oldest most continuously inhabited city, and the first UNESCO site in Southern Italy (pipping even Pompeii).
5

Montescaglioso

Thursday | 67.3km & 1,035m
In this loop, we will climb to Montescaglioso, a small picturesque town atop of a hill that used to be the center of a county in the Norman Kingdom of Sicily. Between, expect Puglia plains and fields of olive trees.
6

Ponte di Gravina

Friday | 82.7km & 993m
On our last ride day, pace yourself in the first quarter because there’ll be plenty of climbing throughout the route. We first go downhill and flat as we leave Matera. We pass by the untouched forest of Selva di Serro Pizzuto before climbing toward the town of Gravina in Puglia. Our last stretch is our way back to Matera.
7

DEPARTURE

Saturday
All good things must come to an end, but hopefully you’ll be going home with plenty of fond memories from this Puglian adventure.
