Giorgio Valvassori

The Storyteller

You may hear the sweet, sweet notes wafting towards your window at Borgolecchi, as our resident aristocrat practices his new found love of the clarinet. We’re never quite sure if all of his stories are based on reality, but they are without a doubt highly entertaining. Probably the greatest tale Giorgio is prone to tell you is that he’s not really a cyclist. This yarn is not to be believed.

Giorgio is a supportive presence, encouraging you during challenging climbs and even joining you in races if you’re up for it. His philosophy revolves around embracing life to the fullest and seizing every moment. In Giorgio’s words, “I’m sure other good companies around offer great trips. But we’re specifically trying to give our guests the closest experience of what it means to be in a pro team, at any speed.”

Le Marche Test Ride

Sunday | 26km & 543m

Bienvenuto! The Marche is a hidden gem. Situated between the Adriatic Sea and its more popular neighbor Tuscany, this peaceful and sparsely populated region has often gone unnoticed by travelers. However, with a series of delightful hilltop towns and a diverse landscape that includes snow-covered Apennine mountains, idyllic beaches, and enchanting caves, it’s the ideal place to explore Italy without the crowds. This is just a short ride to start an incredible week.

2

Filodivino Offana Loop

Monday | 84km & 1,457m

Today we will be climbing some short and steep ascents, some with an average incline of 7%.

However, the main attraction is the ascent to the beautiful city of Jesi, situated in the Marche region within the province of Ancona. It is located approximately 30 kilometers from the regional capital of the same name and around 20 km from the Adriatic Sea. The historic center of Jesi is surrounded by a well-preserved city wall, considered one of the best-preserved in the entire Marche region. The walls and gates alone are worth a visit. The route spans 1.5km with a height difference of 96m. Constructed between the 13th and 14th centuries on the foundations of the oldest Roman Castrum walls, the Walls of Jesi formed part of an exceptionally well-designed defensive system, complete with integrated architectural and natural elements. Even considering the components, such as towers, gates, and walls – including those that have been demolished or collapsed – one can envision Jesi as one of the best-defended cities in the region.

3

Filodivino Genga Loop

Tuesday | 96km & 1,887m

Today’s ride takes us inland towards the Gola della Rossa and Frasassi Regional Natural Park, one of the green hearts of the Marche Region and the largest protected environment in the region. This park is home to hidden treasures within a charming and harmonious landscape, surrounded by untouched, lush nature.

The highlight of today’s ride is the Avacelli Castle, which has stood since 1248 on a hilltop by Rocca Contrada, bordering the territory under the control of Serra San Quirico. The entrance gate, with a ravelin and part of the stone wall, remains as the only evidence of the old defensive building. The castle’s church, San Lorenzo, dates back to the late 15th century and houses a spectacular terracotta altar adorned with a painting of the Madonna of Mercy (16th century), attributed to an artist from the Marche who was influenced by Agabiti and Friar Mattia.

4

Filodivino Ostra Loop

Wednesday | 56km & 1,035m

After all the climbing, we are now taking a slower pace ride. Today, we are stopping for a coffee at Ostra, a charming hilltop town standing at an elevation of 188 meters above sea level. Ostra has ancient origins, dating back to the Roman era when it was known as “Austrum.” Throughout history, the town has been influenced by various rulers, including the Lombards and the Papal States. During the Renaissance period, Ostra flourished as a center of art and culture and boasts several well-preserved historical landmarks from that time. The town’s medieval center is characterized by charming cobblestone streets, ancient buildings, and historical landmarks such as the Palazzo Comunale and the Church of San Giovanni Battista.

5

Filodivino Recanati Ancona

Thursday | 99km & 1,487m

Today’s ride will involve climbing in the second half of the day. We’ll pass by Monte Colombo and Monte Conero before reaching the city of Ancona, the capital of Marche. Ancona is situated on the headland of Monte Conero, hugging the Adriatic coast. The city’s elbow shape allows for stunning sunrise and sunset views over the sea. It is known for its ancient churches, breathtaking panoramas, art, history, and delicious seafood cuisine. Ancona was founded in the 4th century BC by Greek colonists from Syracuse and was later utilized by the Romans for its sheltered anchorage. In 115 AD, under Emperor Trajan, the present harbor walls were constructed. A ceremonial marble arch, named after Trajan, still stands at the end of the docks to commemorate this achievement.

6

Ancona Offana Loop

Friday | 70km & 1,226m

On the last day of our trip, we have planned a picturesque cycling route starting from Ancona and heading south, then inland, before returning. This ride will take us through this beautiful region, offering a perfect mix of coastal scenery, historic towns, and scenic hills. Along the way, we will have the opportunity to explore charming villages and enjoy the Mediterranean sunshine as we bike through this enchanting landscape.

7

DEPARTURE

This is our final morning together and after a leisurely breakfast, it will be time to say goodbye, or at least arrivederci, until we meet again. Transfers to the airport will be arranged by our hard-working crew but if you’re planning on staying a few extra days, let us know if we can help with reservations or a few recommendations.
