Lead Guide:

Sancho da Cruz

Many professional cyclists come to the Andalusia region to live and train. And for a good reason. The weather is perfect for long days in the saddle and the landscape is taken straight from a cyclist’s dream playbook.

We will explore every aspect of this region on this trip, from the rolling hills where we will be surrounded by the region’s world renowned olive trees, to the mountains of the Sierra Nevada where we will be able to spot Morocco in the distance and we throw in some stunning rides along the Mediterranean Sea for good measure.

On this week-long journey, through the lands, culture and cuisine, you’ll get to know the Andalusia region of Spain. You will experience all the wonders it has to offer, from the sea to the mountains and from the mountains to the sun-drenched rolling hills of the interior, all from the vantage point of your saddle. And while exploring the numerous white hilltop villages and the snow capped Sierra Nevada mountains, we will also take the opportunity to experience the region’s traditional Flamenco dancing and world renowned Iberian Ham.

MEET THE GUIDES

Sancho

Sancho da Cruz

The late bloomer

Sancho had a late start to cycling, but he has been very passionate about bikes ever since. His love for the sport even made him change career paths to race professionally — until, oh, the pandemic. Covid saw him go back to school; he became one of our guides after interviewing João for his masters final thesis on Active Tourism. Today, he is more than happy to share his passion for the sport with you, helping you on and off the bike, whether your goal is to go full gas or simply take it easy and make the most of the scenery.

Rui Vinhas

Rui Vinhas

Born in the North of Portugal, Rui has been riding his bike since he was 10. In 2011, he became a professional cyclist and just five years later he won the Tour of Portugal. The following year, in 2017, he was the runner-up in the Portuguese Cycling Championship. His talent and incredible bike skills will be by your side during our trips.

DAY BY DAY BREAKDOWN

1

ARCHIDONA

Sunday | 35km & 670m
Bienvenido a España! Our first ride is an easy spin to shake off the cobwebs, but it’s also very pretty, as we ride in the foothills of the Sierra de Gracia, towards the welcoming village of Archidona. This is the time to make sure everything with your bike is perfect – if something’s not quite right, let a mechanic or a guide know and we’ll be sure to fix it before the tough riding begins.
2

FUENTE DE LOS 100 CAÑOS

Monday | 84km & 1,435m

On today’s ride, we ride in between Sierra de Loja and Sierra Gorda mountain ranges. Surrounded by olive and almond groves the region provides a tranquil and quite exceptional place to ride. But the highlight of the ride arrives just before we get to the highest point of our ride: Fuente de los Cien Caños. In this natural water source, the water has always been collected by many different irrigation systems with the top and bottom ones connected by a huge number of pipes.

3

LAGO IZNAIAR

Tuesday | 76km & 1,659m
In this loop, we will have a day of ups and downs, so pace yourself in the first few climbs. We will also have a day with beautiful countryside and olive plantations towards Iznájar, a typical Arab village with its castle dominating the dramatic setting overlooking the blue waters of the Embalse de Iznájar.
4

GRANADA

Wednesday | 98km & 1,030m
This point to point ride will take us to our new home in Granada. Spectacular and ever changing scenery will surprise you as you crest every climb. The city’s name may have been derived either from the Spanish granada, “pomegranate,” a locally abundant fruit that appears on the city’s coat of arms, or from its Moorish name, Karnattah (Gharnatah), possibly meaning “hill of strangers.”
5

VUELTA A GRANADA

Thursday | 55km & 1,104m
We head out of Granada and we start immediately climbing towards our biggest climb of the day until we reach Beas de Granada at 1164m. Spectacular and ever changing scenery will surprise you as you crest every climb. The names of pro riders like Valverde and Contador can still be seen painted on the road from a recent “La Vuelta a España” as we ascend up towards the white villages of the area before heading back to Granada.
6

SIERRA NEVADA

Friday | 76km & 2,097m
On our last ride, we have the chance to ride up “Europe’s highest road bike climb”.
A climb of 30kms up to 2,270m into the thin air of the Sierra Nevada mountains. It really is an incredible climb. The Sierra Nevada is a UNESCO Biosphere reserve and a much loved national park of Spain. Higher and higher the road climbs as Granada and the villages below appear to become smaller and smaller. Our descent has countless switchbacks as it swoops down through the lush green valleys and downwards even further to arrive back in Granada for the final time.
7

DEPARTURE

Saturday
This is our final morning together and after a leisurely breakfast, it will be time to say goodbye, or at least arrivederci, until we meet again. Transfers to the airport will be arranged by our hard-working crew but if you’re planning on staying a few extra days, let us know if we can help with reservations or a few recommendations.
