ABOUT THIS TRIP

When you imagine the Algarve, do you think of beautiful beaches and luxurious holidays? Well, it’s also a fantastic place for biking and exploration. Many of the inGamba team members, including guides, soigneurs and mechanics, call Portugal home. This special randonnée presents an opportunity for participants to benefit from their intimate knowledge and explore the Algarve.

Situated at the southernmost point of Portugal, the Algarve features sun-kissed, golden-sand beaches, whitewashed houses with Moorish terraces, and some of the finest food in the country. You can choose from dishes like tender stuffed squid, xerém (corn porridge with clams), juicy and sweet oysters and clams, and local vegetables and fruits like figs and oranges, as well as nuts and cheese.

Riding along the Portuguese coast offers stunning views of cliffs, with elevations around 100 meters and climbs reaching up to 300 meters. However, the real magic lies further inland, where you’ll find some of Portugal’s best cycling routes. It’s no wonder the Volta ao Algarve returns here every year in February!

The Volta ao Algarve provides a major early test for the pro peloton, attracting some of the world’s best riders to its start line. It’s the perfect tune-up for one-day specialists ahead of the Spring Classics, while Grand Tour riders use it to shake off the winter rust. Packed with punchy finishes, a short time trial, and a little bit of everything for the diverse mix of stars in the line-up, this race is one exhilarating journey. You’ll have the opportunity to watch the pros in action and take on some of the same routes they ride. For instance, the Mount Fóia climb near Monchique is a regular feature in the race and is esteemed as the region’s most renowned climb. It’s 7.3 km long with an average gradient of 5.9% and is definitely a challenge worth embracing.

Each night, unwind in the comfort of exquisite 4 and 5-star accommodations like the beachfront Porto Covo Praia Hotel, the serene Praia do Canal Nature Retreat, and the mountaintop oasis of Pure Monchique Hotel.

Paulo Crispim

Paulo began mountain biking at the early age of 16, and soon his love for bicycles, road cycling, and mechanics were there. Almost a decade later, he decided to take the risk and become a bicycle mechanic, but he never stopped participating in granfondos and amateur races. He joined inGamba as a mechanic in 2019 and now he is also one of our guides.

DAY BY DAY BREAKDOWN

1

PORTO Covo Loop

Sunday | 34km & 282m

Our journey starts in Porto Covo, considered one of the most beautiful areas in Portugal. Porto Covo is situated on the Alentejo Coast, a little over two hours south of Lisbon. It is a stunning countryside area, surrounded by the ocean, sand dunes, and pine forests. This is a gentle ride to shake off any cobwebs and ensure that everything is to your liking on your Pinarello. If something isn’t quite right, now is the time to talk to the mechanic.

2

Coast & "Rollers"

Monday | 111km & 1,200m

On our second day, we will ride inside the Natural Park of Southwest Alentejo, an area sandwiched between the wild hills and the crashing waves of the Atlantic. Along the way, there are little villages and farms stretching out in every direction, criss-crossed by empty, undulating roads. Aside from the occasional tractor, we can expect to have the road to ourselves all day.

3

Porto Covo - Aljezur

Tuesday | 115km & 1,500m
Aljezur is a small town on the Vicentine coast with houses typical of the Algarve’s rural architecture, where colored window openings and platbands enhance the white façades. The winding, narrow streets of the town transport the visitor to the distant times of the Arab medina.
4

South Of Portugal (Sagres)

Wednesday | 85km & 1000m
Today, our ride takes us to Sagres. This charming, narrow village boasts breathtaking views of the Algarve’s stunning landscape and a sense of being at the edge of the world. Its rugged cliffs, standing tall above the churning sea, are adorned with historic fortresses that highlight Portugal’s impressive maritime heritage. Sagres is a unique sanctuary where white storks choose to build their nests on the sheer cliff faces.
5

Foia

Thursday | 94km & 2,009m

Today we tackle one of the most legendary climbs of the Volta ao Algarve. The Mount Fóia climb, nestled near Monchique, is a staple of the race and the most renowned climb in the region. Spanning 7.3km with an average gradient of 5.9%, it may not be the most grueling (although watch out for a few steep sections), but it perfectly embodies the essence of road cycling in the Algarve.

6

Alte Loop

Friday | 110km & 1,242m

Alte, a charming village situated in the Algarvian Serra, is renowned for its narrow cobblestone streets, whitewashed buildings adorned with vibrant flowers, and a relaxed ambiance, offering an authentic Algarve experience. Notably, the Volta ao Algarve, an annual cycling event, passes through one of Alte’s streets, where locals create the “Tour Clothesline.” This unique initiative involves hanging 200 cycling jerseys from around the world on a clothesline as the peloton races past.

7

DEPARTURE

Saturday
This is our final morning together and after a leisurely breakfast, it will be time to say goodbye, or at least arrivederci, until we meet again. Transfers to the airport will be arranged by our hard-working crew but if you’re planning on staying a few extra days, let us know if we can help with reservations or a few recommendations.

STAYING LONGER?

Adventure Continues…
Do you plan to come a few days early, or stay on after your inGamba adventure has ended? Our concierge can help you plan with a carefully curated selection of hotels, restaurants, bars, and guides. All of our recommendations have been hand-picked by a team of local experts, so you can spend more time enjoying all that this destination has to offer.

The latest version of the DOGMA features an advanced fiber with remarkable tensile strength, which enables Pinarello to improve the bike’s lateral stiffness performance. With this enhancement, the New DOGMA F is engineered to tackle any road challenges, establishing itself as a reliable option for all kinds of rides.

In addition, it comes equipped with the new SRAM RED AXS, the lightest electronic groupset to date. The controls have been redesigned to offer smooth, comfortable ergonomics for a wide range of hand sizes. What makes this groupset stand out is the effortless braking, allowing for one-finger braking with minimal effort. The RED brakes now require 80% less effort when braking from the hoods and 33% less effort from the drops, delivering more power and reducing hand fatigue.
