Alentejo and its wines

$8,950
Lead Guide:

Manuel Cardoso

Much of the inGamba team of soigneurs and mechanics call Portugal home. This special trip is an opportunity to share their intimate knowledge and discover Alentejo, the sparsely populated, agrarian region known as Portugal’s breadbasket, that is also one of the world’s most charming and unique destinations. Alentejo is famous for rich, uncomplicated cooking and for its salt cod, sheep’s cheese, black pork, olive oils, mushrooms – and its wine. The region makes almost half of Portugal’s total, and in some neat synergy, it’s also the largest producer of cork in the world.

Included With Trip:

  • All lodging*
  • All food and beverages**
  • Pinarello Dogma F with SRAM RED eTap AXS
  • Daily Bike Wash
  • Custom Castelli × inGamba cycling kit
  • Daily post-ride massage from a professional soigneur
  • Laundry service for cycling clothing

*Pre/post-trip lodging is not included

**Beverages ordered by guests beyond normal amounts and away from group activities will incur additional charges

You can read more about what this trip is like on our blog, or check out this article from Travel + Leisure, who traveled to Alentejo with inGamba.

MEET THE GUIDES

MANUEL CARDOSO

The Quiet Crusher

Manuel Cardoso is no longer sitting on the front of the pack, pulling everyone along at what some would describe as a “brisk” pace and what others are unable to describe at all, because they’re too busy gasping for breath and holding onto the wheel in front of them for dear life. Manuel is now sitting just slightly off the back of the pack. As I look back, I realize he has that look on his face. The look which struck fear in the hearts of the Pro Peleton for many years. The look which is part grin, part mischievous child and all business. He is about to start some shenanigans. Sure enough, just a few kilometers later and Manuel has picked one lucky contestant out of the pack and they are sitting-in, waiting, like predators, for the perfect moment. For Manuel, just like when he raced pro, this is when the road turns slightly up, a spot in the road where it gets tough for everyone. And he accelerates with his breakaway “partner” in tow. It is something to see. He ramps it up to a speed with which no one can latch onto the back and with such precision you have to question whether or not you actually want to try and close the gap he has created. And you can’t see it, but you just know, he is grinning from ear-to-ear.

DAY BY DAY BREAKDOWN

1

Estremoz Test Ride

Sunday | 33km & 344m

Our journey commences in Estremoz, a quaint town in Alentejo that takes you back in time. The area is dotted with little villages and farms that stretch out in all directions, connected by quiet, rolling roads. This is a gentle ride that allows you to warm up and check that everything on your Pinarello bike is in order. If there is something that needs attention, now is the opportune moment to speak to the mechanic.

2

Vila Viçosa LOOP

Monday | 79m & 748m

The ride is just under 80 kilometers long, so it will challenge your endurance, but the breathtaking scenery and peaceful roads make it worth the effort. The route includes some rolling hills and a long stretch of uphill riding that takes you all the way to Vila Viçosa, a town that was once the residence of the Portuguese royal family.

3

Redondo Loop

Tuesday | 81km & 894m
Exploring Estremoz on a bike is like taking a step back in time, into a world of small villages and sprawling farms that extend in every direction, with empty and undulating roads crisscrossing through them. The route for this loop starts by heading south towards Redondo, then turning towards Aldeia dos Orvalhos, and finally heading back north to Estremoz. We can expect to have the road all to ourselves for the entire day, with occasional tractors as the only traffic.
4

Vieiros LOOP

Wednesday | 57km & 542m
This loop takes you through the Northeast of Estremoz until you reach the 13th-century town of Vieiros. Although there are no significant climbs, you can expect plenty of “Portuguese rollers,” which are small hills that may sap your energy over the course of a long day of cycling. You will definitely deserve a well-earned aperitivo after this ride.
5

Evora Monte Loop

Thursday | 71km & 630m
This ride takes you through the beautiful town of Évora Monte, which is located on a mountaintop and surrounded by walls that protect its residents. Although there are no major inclines, you will encounter several hills that may appear small on a map, but they can be quite challenging and tiring during a long day of cycling.
6

Sousel Loop

Friday | 85km & 853m
The route begins by heading north towards Sousel. From there, it turns towards Vierios before heading south to Estremoz. Sousel is a beautiful village located in the peaceful Alentejo region with vast plains. It was once home to the great Portuguese poet Luís de Camões (1524-1580), and that’s why the tower there is often called the “Camões Tower”.

DEPARTURE
