Donkey Week – Strade Bianche

SOLD OUT

The Strade Bianche has only been on the professional bicycle calendar since 2007, but its combination of the Tuscan landscape, gruelling gravel roads and iconic finish in the centre of Siena has made it an instant classic with fans. It’s also a firm favorite in the peloton, with some of the best one-day riders battling it out for honors on the white roads. Just a quick look at recent winners – Zdeněk Štybar, Michał Kwiatkowski, Fabian Cancellara, Philippe Gilbert – tells you all you need to know about its reputation with the pros.

It’s a special week you won’t want to miss, not only for the chance to see some of the world’s top pros racing up close, but also because we’ll ride some of the best roads the region has to offer, including some hidden stretches of white road that we’ve grown to love. And best of all, you’ll get to do all of that on our brand new fleet of gravel-specific bikes from Pinarello. This is a truly unique trip and a great way to kick off the season. You just need to bring your enthusiasm, your love of professional cycling and your early season legs – we’ll take care of the rest.

Day by Day Breakdown

1

Terra Classica

We always do the Badia a Coltibuono loop as our first ride when we arrive in Lecchi after a long day of travel, but this week we have special bikes, so this time we're going to test them out on some of Tuscany's famous white roads! As the late afternoon light gives a glow to the hillsides and the shadows lengthen, we will roll along ridge tops, through small villages where the locals wave as you go by, and past the ancient olive groves that blanket these fertile hillsides. This ride has one long, solid climb – which should shake out any cobwebs built up during your flight.

Strade Bianche Race Course – with extra good stuff!

Although we will get another opportunity to ride much of the Strade Bianche race course during the granfondo on Sunday, we won’t have the opportunity to ride the course in peace and solitude. Also, there are some sections that the race doesn’t do that really can’t be skipped in good conscience! We won’t start at the official beginning of the course in Siena, but we will do the bulk of the it and stop for some photos. We'll probably see a few pro riders out doing a bit of recon too. Tonight's dinner is with our friends up the hill at Castello di Ama, and you can expect a wonderful meal in intimate surroundings, around their private dining room table by the hearth.
3

Castelnuovo Berardenga Coffee Ride

Today is a bit of a rest day, as the group heads out on João’s traditional coffee shop ride. Even though this is Donkey Week, it's important to have some easy days too. Expect gentle rolling hills and plenty of time for on-the-bike conversation or some horsing around by Raul as we make our way to Castelnuovo Berardenga. Don’t forget to stash your Giordana cap in your jersey pocket: It’s a fashionista prerequisite for a proper espresso stop.
4

Jered Gruber's Dream Ride

We're leaving behind our normal Chianti courses for this one, and opting for the road less traveled. The renowned cycling photographer and friend of inGamba, Jered Gruber, has slid and bounced his normal road bikes over just about every meter of Strade Bianche in a 50km radius of Lecchi, and today we will discover the best of the best on a course designed by him, just for us. You're in for a treat.
5

Strade Bianche Pro Race

Today the pros will battle it out amongst themselves on the rough gravel roads that bisect these Tuscan hillsides. There will be flat tires, carnage, and only a few will be left with a chance to win after 176km. It can be dry and dusty, or rainy and cold, but whatever the weather, it's always one of the season's most exciting showdowns. We'll do our own ride in the morning, and then spend the afternoon chasing the race in a few select locations chosen by Mr. Gruber, before a mad dash to Siena to see the fireworks on the final climb into the walled city.
6

Strade Bianche Granfondo

Today will be our turn at the Strade Bianche course. Although our route will be a little shorter and have a little less climbing than the professional race, it promises to be an unforgettable experience, hitting the gravel alongside thousands of other cyclists. We'll be the best equipped riders out there with our Gan GR, and unlike everyone else, you know that you'll be able to rely on the famous inGamba mechanical service. After the event we'll celebrate at our home in Lecchi, with some bistecca alla fiorentina.
7

Badia a Coltibuono

The Badia a Coltibuono ride always reminds us how lucky we are to be able to ride here. Named after an abbey founded in 1051 by the patron saint San Giovanni Gualberto, where our founder João married his wife Tiiu in 2004. After an enjoyable 7km climb to Badia a Coltibuono, there’s a rhythmic descent to Radda as a reward for your efforts. Of course, since this is a special one-off trip, we might end with a few last kilometers of strade bianche, just for fun. After a light lunch at Borgolecchi we will have a 90 minute transfer to Florence to end our trip.
