Puglia with World Bicycle Relief

$8,950

Puglia, the heel of Italy’s boot, is an enchanting region full of medieval hilltop villages and charming little towns, with a landscape that is dominated by picturesque vistas of vineyards and olive groves, rolling over unspoiled countryside, and of course, mile and mile of pristine coastline along the beautifully blue Adriatic Sea.

It has long been a favorite destination for Italians seeking sand and sunshine, not least because the country’s culinary cognoscenti rank it as one of the best places to eat in the Bel Paese – a statement that no one can make lightly. Local produce is the star of Puglian cuisine, and from the seasfood to the freshly picked greens, you won’t find better ingredients anywhere. And as for the wine, whether it’s Salice Salentino, Negroamaro, Primitivo, or the Bombino Nero, there’s a world of interesting flavors waiting to be discovered.

The riding will be as vibrant and as varied as the region’s terrain, and whether we’re cruising along the shore or climbing deep into the mountains of the Gargano National Park, there will not be a dull moment in this unforgettable week.

Day by Day Breakdown

1

Torre Canne

Benvenuti in Puglia! We'll begin with some gentle climbing, through the olive groves and ancient ruins that characterize so much of this wonderful landscape. This is the best time to make sure everything on your bike is perfect, and if you'd like something changed, have a chat with your mechanic before the real fun begins.
2

Alberobello

This area is called the Valle d'Itria, but it's also known widely as the Valley of the Trulli, after the iconic stone dwellings that dot the landscape. The route takes us along a plateau around 400 meters about sea level, and should offer up some stunning views before we reach Alberobello, one of the most stunning towns in Italy.
3

La Citta Bianca: Ostuni

More climbing to begin with today, working our way up through the vineyards and olive groves until we're on top of the Puglian plateau, where the terrain will be undulating. The finish line is another gorgeous town, Ostuni, known as the White City. Cycling history buffs might remember it as the scene of Freddy Maertens' first world championship victory back in 1976.
4

Baia delle Zagare

We start today's route in Trani on the coast on the Gulf of Manfredonia. We roll along the coast past the wonderful Saline di Margherita di Savoia natural reserve. The road from there will be up and down with plenty of eye-catching scenery to take in, before we arrive to our hotel in Baia Delle Zagare.
5

Valico del Lupo

This is a rest day, so be sure to enjoy the leisurely ride and recoup some energy before tomorrow's big day of climbing.
6

Monte Sant'Angelo

We'll be climbing right from the start today as we work our way into the Umbra forest and towards the famous climb to Monte Sant'Angelo, which featured on Stage 8 of the 2017 Giro d'Italia.
7

Peschici

This part of the coastline is considered by many to be the most beautiful in all of Italy, so expect plenty of stunning views today before we head Peschici and then climb back into the forest, before indulging in a long and enjoyable descent back home, complete with unforgettable panoramas.
8

Homeward Bound

All good things must come to an end, but hopefully you'll be going home with plenty of fond memories from this Puglian adventure.
