The Dolomites are a formidable fortress of rock spires and cliffs that have been the stage for some of the most dramatic events in the history of cycling.

  • The entire mountain range is a UNESCO World Heritage Site

  • The saw-toothed ridges and spires are formed from limestone being eroded over millenia

  • During the First World War, the line between the Italian and Austro-Hungarian forces ran through these mountains

  • During the conflict, soldiers constructed many “vie ferrate”, protected climbing paths throughout the mountain range that now attract tourists from around the world

  • The Giro d’Italia, one of cycling’s greatest events. Since its inception in 1909, the Corsa Rosa has been defined by the beauty and difficulty of the Dolomite climbs

  • The Maratona dles Dolomites is arguably the world’s most iconic amateur races. The long route requires more than 4,200m of climbing on some of Italy’s most infamous ascents

  • 27-15c average temperature

  • Minimal wind

  • 21 days of sun a month

  • This region is famous for its long, steady climbs

  • The inclines aren’t as extreme as in other mountainous areas of Europe but these passes are by no means easy, averaging from 5 to 10km long with average gradients between 6 and 10%

“The Dolomites are where the Giro d'Italia's stars are born, where its legends are written. For fans of Coppi, Bartali, Merckx or Pantani, the Maratona dles Dolomites is less a race than it is a pilgrimage.”

Colin O’Brien, Peloton Magazine
